Larry Zermer who played the character named Shelly put the debate as to the location of Camp Crystal lake to rest. In one of his interviews he reminds everyone of the sign that can be seen behind him in the grocery store scene. Which reads 'Welcome to Green Valley NJ.'

I guess it's because I've never been there but I wouldn't expect huge beautiful green hills/mountains like that in NJ.
